About Texas A&M University College Station

Texas A&M University College Station, more often referred to as simply A&M or TAMU, is a coeducational public research university located in College Station, which is a city in Brazos County, in the US state of Texas, with a populaton estimated at a number of approximately 86 000 inhabitants, during the 2006 census. The city is located within the most populated region of Texas, close to 3 of the 10 largest cities in USA: Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio.

 

TAMU's history begins with groundwork laid by the U.S. Congress, for the establishment of Texas A&M in 1862, with the adoption of the Morrill Act, in 1871, the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, then known as Texas A.M.C., being established. First classes were held in October, 1876, with 40 students and 6 faculty members, only white males being accepted, all students being required to participate in the Corps of Cadets and receive military training.

 

In 1963, the instituion was officially named "Texas A&M University", the name changing being approved by the 58th Legislature of Texas, and since then, the university has tripled its enrollment from 14,000 students to over 45,000, offering today degrees in over 150 courses of study through ten colleges, TAMU also housing 18 highly ranked research institutes. Texas A&M is one of the only 3 public universities, with a full-time, volunteer Corps of Cadets, providing more commissioned officers to the United States Armed Forces than any other school outside of the service academies.

 

Athletics

Texas A&M's athletic teams are known as the Texas A&M Aggies, who compete in the Big 12 Conference (South Division), in 20 sports, including in football, in which they won 18 Southwest Conference championships, 2 Big 12 South Division championships, 1 Big 12 championship, and 1 national championship, and basketball, in which they won 11 Southwest Conference championships and 2 Southwest Conference Tournament championships. Overall, as of June 2009, Aggies have earned 130 Southwest and Big 12 conference regular-season and tournament titles and 8 team national championships. Their distinctive colors are maroon and white.

Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are: Martha Madison - actress, best known as Belle Black in Days of our Lives, Frank Ford - founder of Arrowhead Mills, James Wilson - former president of Shell Oil, Jorge F. Quiroga-Ramirez - former president of Bolivia, Martin Torrijos - president of Panama, Aaron Cohen - former Acting Administrator of NASA, Michael Fossum - NASA astronaut, and Edward F. Knipling - Entomologist, 1966 National Medal of Science winner, listed in Esquire magazine as one of the ''100 Most Important People in the World'', in 1970, among many others.
